• The Design of Phone-Based Interfaces for Consumers
  1989 Proceedings of CHI'89 Presents one of the first set of guidelines for using phones as function-limited user interface devices. Used to develop user-interface design standards.
• Shaping user input: a strategy for natural language design
  1989 Interacting with Computers publication with Martin Ringle. Shows that natural-language assistance systems can gain effectiveness by shaping user's input to be more formal and precise.
• The perceived usefulness of computer information sources: A field study
  1990 SIGCHI Bulletin publication with Dick Granda and Joan Winters. Shows that users can be in different cognitive states when seeking assistance.
• A Broader View for Computing Education
  1999 Frontiers in Eduation Conference--Establishes a framework for computing education that includes individual skill courses through advanced degrees and takes education planning to a strategic level
• An improved undergraduate human factors course: three results
  An evaluation of using computer simulations in a human factors design course. Students produced more engineering designs of higher quality.

• U.S. Patent 5,337,347
  Method and Systems for progressive database search termination and dynamic information presentation utilizing telephone keypad input. An early patent in the HCI of tone and cellular phones. The IBM Patent site shows at least 10 patents of subsequent art, that cite it.
• Function-Limited User Interface Devices (FLUIDs)
  An IBM Technical Disclosure Bulletin article that defines an architecture for designing and implementing effective user interfaces utilizing phones, remote controls, and other limited user-interface devices.
• A thumb control for notebook computers
  An IBM Technical Disclosure Bulletin article that discloses the thumb control ensemble used on many notebook computers in the early 1990's.
